3 Year Old Curriculum
Saint Catherine of Siena Early Childhood Education Center provides a place where children will first develop a relationship with learning. The children will be actively engaged in a loving and nurturing environment where they will grow through PLAY, reading, and exploration. Students will complete various activities that correspond with a theme; academic, social, and personal development will be fostered in a “stress-free” setting.
Religion: Students will be exposed to Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments and will learn about the life of Jesus; the things that He did and the people that He met. Young learners will also participate in daily prayer and lessons related to being part of a Catholic Church family.
Reading Readiness: Students will recognize their first name and practice identifying letters from left to right. Students will identify similarities and differences among objects and will sort objects according to common characteristics, with emphasis on colors. Students will also be exposed to letter/sound
recognition – basic phonics – using the Wilson method; Fundations.
Math Readiness:. Students will recognize and identify basic shapes, count objects using one to one correspondence, count up to ten in the proper sequence, and sort objects according to common characteristics.
Communication Skills: Students will communicate needs to teachers and peers, speak in sentences, share experiences with teachers and peers, recall words from songs or finger plays, participate in music class, follow simple directions, listens to stories and actively participate in language-enhancing activities such as Circle Time and Story Circle.
Self-Help Skills: Students will practice putting on or taking off jackets/outerwear independently,
students will wash hands properly and will help clean-up classroom materials in a cooperative manner.
Social and Emotional Skills: Students will adjust to the school routine and will try new activities, transitioning easily from one task to another, students will continue with a task after making a mistake, students will play with peers in a cooperative manner and will use appropriate problem-solving
skills during a time of need. Students will participate in teacher-directed group activities. The goal of the 3 year old class is to participate using “good Manners” and to always be a “good friend.”
Fine Motor and Gross Motor Skills: Students will coordinate eye-hand movement
by assembling puzzles, stringing beads, using brushes, markers, and crayons
with increasing control, and will attempt to manipulate scissors. Students will also use small pencils to
practice tracing and writing the letters of their names going from left to right across a page. Students will also participate in large muscle play during playground time and Gym class.
